Logs must be protected against wood rot, fungi, mold and mildew. Some manufacturers pre-treat their logs by dipping them in a wood preservative such as zinc napthanate, or by pressure treating them. This treatment is normally sufficient to prevent decay from brown and white rot, or insects, but does not always protect against blue fungi or surface mildew growth. If you are located in an area of high humidity and warm temperatures, or have wet logs, you will need to apply a wood preservative before coating.

Hint:
It typically takes 3 coats of Sikkens Translucent Exterior Wood Finish to adequately protect your new log home. Plan to make the first coat Cetol 1, followed by 2 coats of Cetol 23. Periodic recoats should only require 1 coat.
